Description of Online Training Program:

This online program meets the training and/or program requirements of:

Adult Education and Computer Managed Learning (CML) principles.

Occupational Health and Safety Educational requirements, including training in additional languages.

The Ground disturbance, Safe Dig and Safe Excavation procedures, from multiple Provincial and Federal Regulations, Codes and Acts (such as OH&S, National Energy Board and the Pipeline act of Canada, to name a few).

Worker Awareness Level

Successful completion of this program will ensure each participant can describe the following:

  • Identify a ground disturbance (Excavation)
  • Understand the safety and legislation requirements
  • Required documentation procedures when conducting a ground disturbance.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities that pertain to themselves and the site supervisor, the line locator person, facility owner and the person(s) that actual create the ground disturbance.
  • Emergency Response Planning and how to be prepared.
  • Development of a damage prevention plan for each ground disturbance including hazard assessments.
  • Safety Zones and Work Zones as defined under legislation.
  • Selection of the appropriate equipment for the task.
  • Working knowledge of locate procedures, requirements and training.
  • Underground facility markers.
  • Different types and conditions of soil and the affect they have on ground disturbance.
  • Legal requirements and practical techniques of soil stabilization.

Supervisory Level

The second portion (Supervisory Level) of the program involves a direct one on one with an experienced validator in which the student will be tested on knowledge and asked to explain in detail the process of conducting a safe ground disturbance. Topics will include all documentation gathering, planning and managing the process.

**Prior to registering for the Supervisory level, the student must have successfully completed the worker awareness level. 

Validator Level

Minimum Requirements for validator program Include:

  • Completion of High School or Equivalence (education and capable of both verbal and written communication).
  • Have obtained their Ground Disturbance supervisory level within the past two year and a minimum of 7 years experience at a supervisor level.
  • Have completed the CSSE Obligations and Liabilities for Occupational Health and Safety Professional, two day program.
  • Has formally been trained as a Ground Locator either internally or externally.
  • Completed the one day validator program.

This program was developed to help the employer to provide Due Diligence to their Employees, Supervisors, and Contractors by ensuring competency and understanding of their legal and moral responsibilities.
